Patriotism and Human Dignity
By Sowore Omoyele
Since September 11th 2001, a new era has shadowed this land. It is being shaped daily through numerous mechanisms of law, arm-twisting and general propaganda. The dignity of everyone based in the US, either visitor or immigrant, depends largely on the conveyor of the mechanisms of security and safety. Public safety is no longer defined by any known logic. Behind everyones' back, some architects are building a new nation of which only the architects understand the dynamics.

I cannot say for certain, who belongs to the new nation, but it is fast becoming clear that immigrants from a number of states associated with crimes allegedly committed by their countrymen and women, are being quarantined daily, not because they have crime records or have been known to commit any crimes or acts associated with terrorism, but because they are simply victims of an immigrant allergic apparatus. There are more than a handful of immigrants whose daily lives, career and peace have been disrupted by incessant and utterly excessive demands requiring compliance.

The laws are coming up so fast, not even lawyers can tell which is which. In a general sweep referred to as Operation Liberty Shield, nationalities of several nations are being summoned to register with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. There are several bills in the works, proposed by mainstream fanatic America, to curtail civil liberties. Fundamental human rights for the weak, vulnerable and poor are beginning to look bleak. I have always considered the legislation of human rights as an aberration. I hate to contribute to human rights discourse that breaks down rights into categories or defines them as derogable or non-derogable, justiceable or non-justiceable, but what we are learning very fast is that some rights can be expensive and non-expensive. For the bukkah wearing Muslim from Pakistan, Morocco, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Philippines, Yemen, Indonesia and Egypt, an expensive human rights bill micro-managed by a 40-billion dollar agency for Homeland Security is not only expensive but harrowing.

Torture, which was once an abomination in this land, has returned with full force. We have been told that torture is acceptable since, in this moment, it seems that everywhere you look there is a ticking-bomb waiting to explode. Yesterday's rogue nations are contracted and granted blank concessions that enable them help to firm up suspected terrorists in countries like Egypt, Syria, Morocco and Yemen. It is now official that your nationality confers guilt, until you can be proven innocent, even though you may have always been a victim of the brutal regimes of those countries. It is ironic that victims of brutality can share in the fate of corrupt and brutal leaders of their countries.

The engine of this reckless authority is a new kind of patriotism. It has its own genetic, geographic and demographic spread in some ways. It has a racial coloration to it, but in some ways, it also defies race, color, class or creed. It is a patriotism that has created new citizens, a new media, a new state, a new expression and a new language. Naturally, when leaders of otherwise peaceful and fairly just nations remind their citizens to be patriotic, it is a sign of horrible times lurking. Society becomes very dangerous when any nation develops a patriotic class inspired by construction sites ideology.

The most interesting part of this new experience is the underlying tone of resurgence of suppressed antagonism to immigrants by those whose ancestors were once immigrants. Previously the Chinese exclusion act excluded Chinese laborers, the gentleman agreement with Japan; the exclusion of polygamists; homosexuals, persons with mental disabilities, prostitutes and convicts. History has taught everyone that these acts did not serve the cause of humanity; rather they have left a bitter chapter in human history and created victims rather than security or safety.
