Tahiti, playing in its first major FIFA tournament, were definitive underdogs in their Monday game against Nigeria at the Confederations Cup. And even with the African champions missing several clear scoring chances, three goals from 22-year-old Italy-based Nnamdi Oduamadi and a further two from S.C. Braga defender Elderson Echiéjilé were more than enough to sink the South Pacific island nation.
Still, it was the Tahitians that won the crowd's collective heart yesterday, with the local Brazilians cheering them on and booing Nigeria's Super Eagles at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. That support seemed to be paying off when Jonathan Tehau pulled one back for the islanders early in the second half, but it couldn't stop the marauding Nigerians from claiming an eventual 6-1 win that saw them shoot to the top of Group B ahead of World Cup winners and European champions Spain.
