THE SOWETO GOSPEL CHOIR
By Cynthia Nakpodia-Ribeiro
AFRICAN SPIRIT
SHANACHIE

Void of overdubbing, synthesizing and the vocal pyrotechnics associated with most commercial acts these days. The down home grown Soweto gospel choir is an electrifying ensemble of singers, who will touch you by both their stories and their singing.

On their latest release African Spirit, they venture into crossover land by doing renditions of inspirational songs by popular international artist such as Nina Simone, U2's Bono, Jimmy Cliff, and Bob Dylan. Don't fret; they haven't left out their classic South African spirituals (folksy seared African music) on this album, you will hear songs like track 17 - Somlandela and track 14 - Modimo and understand why they won the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album of the year.

The Soweto gospel choir's story is as captivating as their singing. Consisting of a few members whom are struggling with the HIV/AIDS virus, this ensemble truly exemplifies what it takes to have and give hope, faith and the spirit to prevail despite the odds. Can you say UPLIFTING?
