Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is now under way in New York and it’s exciting to see all the colorful and varied confections being displayed on the Runway.
The African Fashion Collective show sponsored by ARISE magazine, a division of the Nigerian newspaper,THISDAY, managed to produce a show that highlighted all the attributes and genuine beauty of this richly gifted and sometimes neglected continent. These designs have been noticeably missing from the famed catwalks for too many years.
It was truly an inspiration to the fashion community to witness the beauty and complexities of all things African. The Collective featured four very talented and promising designers: Folake Folarin-Coker (Tiffany Amber), Eric Raisina (Eric Raisina Haute Texture), David Tlale and Lisa Folawiyo (Jewel by Lisa). They each brought their own unique brand of individualism and a funky interpretation of what they consider stylishly chic but yet appropriately functional.
Attention was paid to easily movable fabrics with strong accents on colors and patterns. Africa is a continent known for mouth-watering palettes, stunning drapery and prints--- there was a lot of that showcased on the runway. Attention was also paid to intricate designs that featured ruffles, pleats and form-fitting attire with eye-catching appliqué details. It was the perfect fusion of the ethnic and western mentality. Resulting in a thunderous success!
